The « Anciennes troupes militaires de Montréal » (ATMM) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote activities reflecting the history of the Compagnies franches de la Marine in New France, the 78th Fraser Highlanders and lasting impact these military personnel had on Canadian and Québec societies.

THE COMPAGNIES FRANCHES
DE LA MARINE

The Compagnies franches de la Marine represent the first permanent troops dedicated entirely to the defense of New France.  They were organized as independent companies under the Ministry of Marine and Colonies.  After their arrival in 1683, they occupied the entire French colonial territory.  The largest contingent was located in Montréal under the responsibility of the Governor of Montréal.

LE 78th FRASER
HIGHLANDERS

The 78th Fraser Highlanders was raised in Scotland during the Seven Years’ War as part of the invasion of Canada by the British army.  Following their arrival at Halifax in early 1758, the regiment was present at the capture of Louisbourg.  They were the largest-represented regiment at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and sustained the highest injuries.  The regiment was the first to enter Montréal by the Porte des Récollets after the Capitulation in 1760.
